THE JOHN MUIR TRAIL

The top picture is a view up the North Fork of Mono Creek. Continuing the descent the trail from Silver Pass soon meets Mono Creek where you follow it downstream about a mile to a bridge crossing of the creek. Nearby is a sulfur spring which is shown below. Some people camp here while others continue hiking about a mile to Lake Thomas Edison. Here they catch the boat taxi to the Vermilian Resort which is a favorite place to resupply with food. A stay in a tent cabin is free for one night for hikers as well as the first beverage. They have high speed internet service so you can download your pictures and email them. That might not be possible if you have a lot of them. If you're still using film you can mail it from here. The resort is under new ownership and he happens to be a backpacker so you'll feel welcome. He's hoping to keep the resort open year round.

Most people stay at the resort or near the bridge that crosses the creek. Its not that good an idea to continue unless you have plenty of time. From the bridge you'll have a 2000 ft climb and won't reach water for two to three hours.
