Leaving behind the campgrounds and store at Tuolumne Meadows, its a level walk up Lyell canyon gaining only 500ft in elevation for the first 4 miles, which is how far you have to hike before camping. Some of the worst bears in Yosemite live here. The bear I mentioned that chewed through the limb to get the food was in this area. Yosemite now discourages hanging food and recent rule changes require bear canisters to be used in most of the park. The same applies for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Above is Mt Lyell at 13,144 ft, the highest point in Yosemite. On its flanks is one of but a few glaciers in Yosemite. The trail climbs up through the trees on the left. The point where the two lines of trees come togeather in the V of the canyon is where the picture below is taken. It's just above what many people call Trail Camp. The trail in the above picture uses switchbacks to climb up the slope on the right to an area shown on the next page. |
