About a mile from end of the descent from Muir Pass you'll pass Grouse Meadow. Along with places like Little Pete Meadow, Grouse Meadow is popular with people fishing as the Middle Fork of the Kings is wide & deep along here. Its been almost a 4000 feet descent from the pass to the bottom, and you have another 4000 feet climb up the other side to Mather Pass at 12,100 feet. Both times I've done this descent I've had problems getting my legs to work going up the other side. After my legs have taken such a beating I've always given up after going about one mile up along Palisade Creek. At the junction of the Middle Fork of the Kings and Palisade Creek they had just finished rebuilding a bridge for those going down canyon. When I returned here about 4 years later that bridge had washed out again. I'm not too sure they ever replaced it. They may have given up as a hell of a lot of water goes down these two canyons in the spring. |
