When
you leave the Anchorage Hut you'll want to check the Tide chart first.
Just a short distance away is Torrent Bay which is crossed at low tide.
There is a trail around the bay but it'll take you at least another
hour. Some people make the crossing barefoot but I used my kayaking
shoes. The mud flats are pretty solid so you won't sink in. The water
level changes quick so if you're a bit early you can wait, or get a bit
wet. In the top picture you'll see some orange signs. They mark the
route across the tide flats. Click on the above picture to see a bigger
version. Below is a view from the crossing looking out toward
sea. More pictures below. |
Torrent Bay has a number of private cabins that you'll pass after the crossing. The trail heads to the bay above before heading up into the hills where you'll get a view down in the direction you just came from. Some of the cabins are quite nice with solar panels etc. There is no electricity in the area . Anchorage Bay and Torrent Bay are both stops for water taxis so if you wanted a ride back you'd just have to wait for one of the boats to show up. When I got my ride back on the last day there were 4 boat companies at Torrent Bay at the same time. The tide was out so you had to wade quite a ways in shallow water. Shorts would be a good item to wear. In the last picture below you can see some of the cabins, as well as the tide crossing on the far right. Click on that picture to see a larger picture where you'll be able to see people on the crossing. |
