The trail ends as you reach the lower part of the Summit
City Creek. This is typical of that area. Once you start the
cross country route you'll need to look for ducks. Ducks are
stacks of rocks, typically 3 to 4 rocks stacked one on top of
the other. These stacks of rocks tend to disappear during the
winter so the first people back start to create more ducks. Others
come along and create more so you have to see which one looks
the best as you go. Usually you can see one or two ducks at a
time. Don't hesitate to remove ducks that are poorly placed.
Ducks are one of several methods used to mark trails. In
some areas you'll see old license plates or plaques nailed in
the trees. Some were done a long time ago so some of those trees
have fallen. This can make navigating harder. Another method
is using a Blaze. A blaze where part of the bark is removed from
a tree and is typically in the shape of a T or I. Blazes in Yosemite
date back about 100 years ago when the Calvary used them when
patrolling the park. I've found these blazes as much as 1/2 a
mile off the trail where the trail has been rerouted.
