The end of the trail with Cathedral Peak visible in the background. From here you can either get more food and continue to Yosemite Valley, about 25 miles, or catch the bus. If you decide to drive up remember that there is limited parking in Tuolumne. A walk in the parking lot will probably tell you that the bears are very good at getting food left in cars so its best to not have a car left here for long periods. There is a bus that leaves Yosemite Valley in the morning that will drop you off anywhere along the route. It makes a return trip in the afternoon and arrives in Yosemite Valley in time to catch the bus to Merced and from there Amtrak. There is also a free shuttle van in the summer between Tuolumne Meadows and Lake Tenaya. There is a backpackers campground here as well as a store, restaurant and post office. Showers are available at the High Sierra Camp. Campground spaces are available in the cabin near the entrance to the campground. You'll need to show them your hiking permit. The restaurant is nothing special, just burgers and hot dogs etc. If the Post Office doesn't have your food package tell them to double check in Yosemite Valley. Its the same zip code. I say this because it happened to me. For as small as the store is its pretty good. I believe there is a mountaineering store in the gas station, which I think has been removed so don't expect to buy gas for your car. |
