Great House Visitors Center. The entrance to the Visitors Center is the original opening to the sand mine that was in operation starting in the 1920's. The sand from this mine was used by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company in Oakland California and continued till the 1940's. Sand from the Nortonville mine supplied the foundry at the Columbia Steel Works in Pittsburg California. Over 1.8 million tons of sand was mined during this period. |
