THE JOHN MUIR TRAIL

The outlet creek at Garnet Lake is crossed by a crude bridge. The rock itself is the dam that holds back the waters of Garnet. After a climb to the south above the lake you'll get your first look at Shadow Lake which is just visible this side of the V notch seen in the picture below, with the next picture taken from Shadow lake looking back up canyon. The PCT is on the far ridge. The last picture is Gladys Lake south of Shadow. From there its a long dusty downhill to Devils Postpile. Only 165 miles to go!

Devils Postpile is a good place for a layover. They do have a spot for backpackers in the campground (of course you have to pay). When I was last there they were looking to rebuild the free hot spring fed showers. Not far away is the store and cafe. If you want you can take the shuttle bus out to the entrance and hitch hike into Mammoth Lakes to pick up food unless you've mailed it to the Reds Meadow Pack Station.
