Big Flat is a popular destination, and a good place to camp. A free standing tent works best here thought. In the picture above you'll see a bunch of rocks to the right. These are left over from dregging operations that went on here in the past. For what reason I don't know why. The ground where I set up my tent is on these same rocks, with almost no soil. This made setting up my tent difficult. I had to resort to using rocks to anchor my tent. Those 120 mph winds the previous winter would have blown me away. You'll also notice a lot of green brush to the right and left of my tent, its all poison oak. To hang my food in the tree I had to stand amoung it. Below you get an idea how Big Flat got its name. There is a trail that follows the creek for about a two miles back. Way up on the crest is the Kings Crest trail. There are several places along the coast that connect with this trail so you could do a loop if you wanted.
