mushrooms above. Much of the area that the Superior Hiking Trail
traverses was logged in the past. Railroads were built to carry the
logs down to the lake, and in many areas the trail crosses these old rail
lines. Its often difficult to tell that a train once traveled
through here but in places such as the picture below its obvious. The other places where the trail uses a rail line you'll know it by the way the trail is
so flat and straight. In other areas where the trail is very straight its due
to fact that the trail is crossing private land. The land owner was
willing to allow the crossing, but has placed the limitation that the
trail use the very edge of his property, which is usually a straight
line. Along these stretches there will usually be a sign posted telling
you to stay on the trail. |
