Beginning your hike you'll spend and hour hiking through Tuolumne Meadows till the trail starts a gentle decent along the Tuolumne River. You'll get some great views in places of the mountains that surround the meadow as seen below. |
Along the way you'll see Little Postpile below located on the south side of the river. Little Postpile is the plug or core of a small volcano that erupted 9.4 million years ago. I've only seen one other area in the park where you can see the remains of a volcanic eruption, and that is in the Merced Pass area dating back 3 1/2 million years ago. If you'd like to read more about the geologic history of the park GORP has excerpts from Jeffrey P. Schaffer's book on Yosemite on their site. |
Shortly before arriving at Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp the trail crosses the river on a bridge and starts to drop. |
You'll know you're at Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp when you see White Cascade. This picture was taken at a time when the flows were low. |
Below is another picture looking toward the falls although its hard to see. You will notice that Tuolumne Meadows was getting plenty of rain. This picture is taken from the bridge crossing the Tuolumne River to Glen Aulin, which is located on the left. |
