At Cathedral Pass you'll be looking directly at Cathedral Peak. Echo Peaks are on the right. Below is another shot of the peak from the meadow below it. Cathedral is a popular climb with climbers and it can be done in one day without camping in the backcountry. The Southeast buttress is rated a 5.6 climb. The peak can be easily climbed from the east or west without gear but the summit block is rated class 4. |
Below is Upper Cathedral Lake. Camping is no longer allowed at the lower lake, so the bears probably frequent this lake more. Nice thunderstorms in the distance over Tuolumne Meadows. |
Cathedral Peak from Lower Cathderal Lake when camping was allowed there. A few days later I brought a married couple here for their first trip into the wilderness. It snowed. In the night we could hear rangers trapping a bear. This was a pretty popular lake on weekends so I can see why they closed it to camping. I normally won't stay at places this close to the road, and generaly don't stay at lakes either. I prefer creeks for the privacy. From here its only a couple hours hike to the trailhead in Tuolumne Meadows. |
