I always like the idea of starting the trail in Yosemite Valley. The beginning of the trip is spent weaving your way around all the kids and parents with their strollers. In about a mile you reach a bridge that crosses the Merced River. You'll be joining everyone on the bridge for the first look at Vernal Falls. For some people this is about as far as they'll go. Shortly the trail splits with the Mist Trail heading to the top of Vernal Falls. If you have a heavy backpack I don't recommend it. In places the trail consist of big granite steps and they're wet! Coming down isn't fun either as its hard on the thighs. The John Muir Trail doesn't go this route. Instead it heads to the side of the canyon where you start the switchbacks. About an hour into the hike you'll reach another branch in the trail which heads down to the top of Vernal Falls. You'll leave more people behind at the falls. They've had enough. |
