THE JOHN MUIR TRAIL

Most of the people that are still on the trail are heading to the top of Nevada Falls which is on the far right of this picture. The dome in the middle is Liberty Dome with Half Dome on the left. Between Nevada Falls and Liberty Dome is the trail from Vernal Falls which heads up through the rocks and intersects this trail. Anyone that's going to the top of Half Dome in a day will have started out early in the morning as its about a 16 mile hike. Upstream from the falls is Little Yosemite Valley with its campground. There is no camping allowed in the valley for anther 4 miles and there are rangers camped here to check. I don't like staying here. It just doesn't have that wilderness feeling and the campground is full every night. There are plenty of bears that frequent the campground even though there are bear boxes. This is also the place where I've seen the biggest rattlesnake I've ever seen. It was crawling through the campground with a ground squirrel on its tail chattering away like crazy to warn the other squirrels. The snakes aren't a big problem but they are there. Check out YosemiteFun.com for a good video about an experienced guy that got bit by a snake here. Some people keep hiking and make it to an area near the junction of the John Muir Trail and the Clouds Rest Trail near Sunrise Creek.
