Descending from Muir Pass you'll soon get a view of Helen Lake, named after John Muir's other daughter. The trail can be seen in the lower right side and if you look hard you'll see a yellow spot about an inch over. That's a sleeping pad on the backpack of a young woman that was out hiking by herself. The trail switchbacks down to the lake and traverses the right side of the lake to the lake outlet. The trail then continues its long descent, which from the pass all the way to the bottom is about 12 miles and 4500 feet in elevation. Below is a picture from my previous hike with my friend approaching the lake in a sky tinted with smoke from a fire. |
