THE JOHN MUIR TRAIL

Unfortunately I pulled a muscle in my back about 20 minutes after I took this picture. The trail switchbacked down the mountain and then across the low moraine ridge running from the center of the bottom of the picture to the right. Split Mountain (14,062) is barely visible on the left. This peak is rated at a class 3 climb (no ropes needed) and has a large lake at its base. About every 10th step I took a pain would shoot up my back so I took 1-1/2 days off and camped down canyon near Cardinal Creek. From there I had good views south toward Pinchot Pass as seen blow. Worried that I might have more problems descending Pinchot Pass I hiked out Taboose Pass to highway 395 and hitch hiked back to Yosemite. The last picture is one I took looking toward Bench Lake from Taboose Pass. The next page has pictures of the John Muir Trail I took on another hike into Kings Canyon.
