After reaching Pate
Valley you can either head north toward Benson Lake, or south
to White Wolf campground. There is one place along the climb
to White Wolf where there is a place for several small groups
to camp, but not much more. Groups is probably the wrong word
for this area, as its is small. Expect to share it. You can view
Hetch Hetchy from there. Hetch Hetchy was a valley on par with
Yosemite Valley. The dam was built to provide water for San Franciso
after the 1906 earthquake. The purpose was to have water to put
out fires. The fallacy of this reasoning was that the water mains
were so damaged that water from Hetch Hetchy wouldn't be of use.
A push has
been made in recent years to remove the dam and restore the valley. |
