 NORTHERN YOSEMITE

Cold Creek, Matterhorn & Kerrick Canyons, Benson Lake

Once you head north from Glen Aulin you see fewer people. Those you do see have probably come over Summit Pass, or from Twin Lakes into Matterhorn Canyon. There has been an increase in horse traffic in the Miller Pass area coming from Virginia Lakes so the nice hard packed dirt trails have become wide paths of dust till you head north from Miller Lake. The east west section of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in Yosemite is suppose to be one of the hardest sections of the PCT to hike. An example is the trail from Benson Lake to Benson Pass. The elevation distance is about 3000 feet, but you'll do a lot of up and down along the way so your total climbing will be much more than that. I've followed this route twice, and I've never seen anyone in Kerrick Canyon. Both times I did the route I ran into trail crews working on the PCT so you can be assured that the trail is in good shape.
