Its an easy hike up Matterhorn Canyon till you start the final climb to Burro Pass. The final part on the south side wasn't the best of trails, but still easy to follow. |
On my first hike through Matterhorn Canyon I saw this bear. Just before I saw it there was a coyote which went up to the left. The bear was sniffing around, and seemed to be following the coyote. There are only black bears in California, and I've never seen a black Black Bear. Most are this color, or with more blond hair on their back. |

The first picture below is from Burro Pass looking into Matterhorn Canyon, while the last picture is looking west into the small canyon below Sawtooth Ridge. The trail on the north side is much better than the south side. I can imagine an ice sheet covering this area, with glaciers going down each canyon and the tops of the ridges and peaks just sticking out of the ice. |
