 NORTHERN YOSEMITE

Cold Creek, Matterhorn & Kerrick Canyons, Benson Lake

There are several small lakes in the Seavy Pass area. Looking at the picture above it doesn't look like there are any good camping spots here, and I don't remember seeing any. Most people want to continue down to Benson Lake. I spent lunch near here once at a small pond, watching a white & brown shrew come out from under a log in the pond and swim around looking for food on the bottom.

Below is a view of descent to Benson Lake with Volunteer Peak in the background just to the left of center. The PCT climbs up on its left on the way up to Benson Pass. You can see below that the trail is steep here, unlike most trails in the Sierras.

Benson Lake is a popular destination even if it is 30 miles from Tuolumne Meadows. Nice sand beaches and warm water are a big draw. Plenty of bears too although I've never had a problem with them. Don't camp under poplar trees like I did. You'll get small specks of sap all over everything. The second time I camped here there was a fallen tree next to me. About the time I fell asleep a scream woke me up. After not hearing it anymore I went back to sleep. Occasional during the night I'd wake up hearing the same noise in the trees. I'm not sure but I think it was a screech owl. When I first heard it I think it was sitting on the tree roots near me. I've only been woken up one other time by an animal and it was in Cold Canyon. That time I think it was a bobcat.

Wildflowers near the Rogers Lake trail junction.

Smegburg Lake below. After climbing 3 hours its a welcome stop for lunch. The trail climbs up to the Rodgers Lake trail junction, before descending, and then climbing back up to Smegburg. Surprise Lake is a short cross country jaunt over the ridge.

Another view of Smegburg Lake below, only further east. Sister Lake is a short hike to the right.
