YOSEMITE SOUTH

Merced Pass to Buena Vista Pass and Illilouette Creek

Buck Camp above is one of the ranger cabins located in the park. You can make out the covered trench of the hose feeding water to the cabin makes its way past the fire pit. At the end of the deck alongside the cabin is a wood panel sticking out from the side of the cabin. Its to provide a bit of privacy for the shower. Look for the shinny shower nozzle sticking out from under the roof. I assume the water can be heated up with a fire inside the cabin.

About an hour hike from Buck Camp is Royal Arch Lake below. I hiked another 15 minutes past the lake before stopping. As soon as I stopped I could hear a pack of coyotes playing. Typical of granite is the peeling of layers much like an onion. This is due to the crystalline structure of the rock.

From near Buena Vista Pass you'll be able to look all the way across the park to Virginia Pass on the northeastern border of the park.

Below you can see the results of a fire which I believe was in the late 1980's. Its located near the junction of Hoover and Illilouette Creeks. I like to hike through these areas to see how things change over the years.

I don't remember taking the last picture, but I'm pretty sure it was taken from the trail between Upper Merced Pass Lake approaching Nevada Falls. Its looking at Yosemite Falls.
