The last few pages were of the John Muir
Trail. It crosses the highway in Tuolumne Meadows to the Soda
Springs and then back. This is the only place on the whole trail
where it crosses a highway. This is also where it joins up with
the Pacific Crest Trail, which it follows for most of its distance.
The exception is the southern end where it heads to the top of
Mt Whitney. They also go their separate ways after reaching Thousand
Island Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. They rejoin at Devils
Postpile National Monument.
There is a shuttle bus at Devils Postpile.
You only pay once, and thats when you get on at the entrance.
While you're in the park its free. There is also a store and
cafe. You can also take the shuttle bus out to the entrance where
you can connect up with Yarts for a ride back to Yosemite, or
beyond. You could also go to the town of Mammoth Lakes to resupply.
Several times I've hiked west from Devils Postpile and then north
to Isberg Pass. Parts of this route needed some trail work last
time I hiked it, but its passable. The two times I've hiked it
I've seen few people. The exception is at Hemlock Crossing, where
there are no Hemlocks.
