This is the view from one of the places
we camped. The deep lakes are colder than the shallow ones. We
didn't do much swimming in June, as they all tend to be cold
then. You have to remember that these lakes sometimes have ice
in them in May.
It was on one of these lake that we met the
Root Beer Lady.
She had lived on a couple islands from 1934 till her death in
1986. The Forest Service attempted to kick her out once the area
was designated a wilderness however, the locals raised such a
fuss that they allowed her to stay. She got her name as she made
Root Beer from extract that she would haul in. Much of here supplies
she brought in during the winter, but some she would canoe in
during the summer. She told us a few bear stories about driving
off bears while portaging. If there were any messages for her
the local radio station would broadcast them at a certain hour
of the day. The local outfitters would always stop in the check
up on her when they passed by.
