After seeing the reversing mill at Pohang we went to Kwangyang, where we got to see one of those 40 foot long slabs come out of the reheat oven and go through another mill where the steel is rolled into a thin strip and coiled up. This is called hot band. These hot bands are then shipped to us. POSCO is so large that we only represent about 8% of the hot bands that they produce. In the picture you can see the stands on the right side. The strip comes out at a high rate of speed and as you can see its still very hot. Its so hot that you can see the rolls through the strip. Water is sprayed on the strip to cool it before its rolled up. These coils are then allowed to cool for 3 days. This picture was taken from the same walkway we used and you could definitely feel the heat. I was impressed by how clean the mills were. Even the outside was clean with plenty of trees planted everywhere. |
