 I have yet to make it to the top of Cinder Cone. The first time I hike by it there were thunder storms in the area. This time I was pressed for time and didn't have enough water (I had to carry enough water for the whole day). There is a campground at nearby Butte Lake which is about reopened for the first time since about 1993. This would be a good place to hike to the top. This picture is from a postcard from the park.

 This picture is from the Nobles Emigrant Trail. As you can see from the trail, in this area it is all volcanic ash. From the imprints on the trail you might get an idea of how hard it is to walk on. I wonder what the first emigrants to use this trail in 1851 thought of, especially since it had just erupted the winter before.
