When the trail leaves
Snag Lake it travels alongside the lava flow toward Cinder Cone.
The volcanic ash doesn't make it easy. It also doesn't help that
the park has done little in the way of trail maintenance. There
were numerous dead trees down across the trail from Snag lake
to Cinder Cone, about 30 in all. I only saw one tree on the whole
hike that looked like it had been cut recently. I almost impaled
myself on one tree while trying to cross it. That tree has probably
been there for years. I can only hope that with the increase
in fees that they will finally correct this situation, but I
doubt it. Instead they will probably spend that money on areas
next to the road. |
