I've always heard that the Desolation Wilderness is the least know wilderness, but the most heavily hiked. I can think of several that aren't as well know so that part isn't true, but I'm sure it's the most heavily hiked. Several years ago they instituted a new policy to charge people for usage, and banned fires. They then reduced the amount of daily permits available. I hate to say it but I agree with their policy. At one lake I've saw 5 fire rings in a 40 foot radius. If you visit the area during the weekdays you'll see fewer people and enjoy yourself much more. Weekends are a zoo. For this reason I've decided not to say too much about the place, but I will share some of my pictures. On a recent 6 day hike there I saw so many people from Lake Aloha to Velma Lakes. I wouldn't have been suprised to see a couple guys walking in with a cooler of beer. I've also included some pictures from the Upper Truckee River near Carson Pass as I can't think of a better place to put them. One last thing about this area. I highly recommend you wear hiking boots. Most of the trails were covered with rocks. There weren't too many places with dirt trails. |
