The northern part of Yosemite is one of the two most remote areas of Yosemite and one where you will not find too many people. I've hiked this area several times, usually spending about two weeks there. If you camp off the trail your chances of meeting anyone is remote. The Pacific Crest Trail as it travels east and west in this area is very rugged, with a lot of climbing and descending. An example is the climb from Benson lake to Benson Pass. It is about 10 miles and is over a 3000 ft climb with a lot of up and down. I've done it twice now and its taken me all day. If you like to go cross country Benson Pass is a great place to start, as you have access to a number of lakes from there. I've hiked the through Kerrick Meadow, and never seen a soul. Although I've never been in Tilltil Valley, I've heard its pretty, with plenty of bears. The same goes for the Bee Hive area near Lake Vernon, plenty of bears there also. Its a popular area for people that only hike in one day, as long as you don't mind the long climb north from Hetch Hetchy. Further north from there is Jack Main Canyon on up to Dorothy Pass. I've hiked it once, and never saw anyone but I'm sure that I'd find people at Tilden Lake. |
